Jackalberry Tree
The Jackalberry tree (Diospyros mespiliformis) is a very common tree in Africa and grows in savannas and woodlands. It is usually found in moist, rocky soils, sometimes around water. It also is found in red loams, or volcanic sand. In many cases a symbiotic relationship is shared between termites and these trees. Termite mounds provide the tree with a source of moisture. They do not harm the living tree. The tree is very large and can grow to 80 feet with a trunk with a circumference of 15 feet. Jackalberry trees produce fruit that is consumed by many different animals. Kukus, nyalas, impalas, warthogs, baboons, parrots, and hornbills all enjoy the food that comes from this tree.

Elephant Grass
Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) grows along rivers in the rich soil. It is very useful to farmers who cut it to use to feed livestock. It can reach heights of up to 10 feet. This plant also has sharp edges which helps keep out animals. However, many birds use this to their advantage and make nests inside it.

Whistling Thorn
Whistling Thorn (Acacia dreparalobium) is extremely common in the Serengeti. It can grow to 18 feet tall, but usually isn't able to reach its full height. This tree has a complicated relationship with ants, and scientists still have not identified it as symbiotic or parasitic. Ants prune flowers on the tree to mark territory so no ant colonies can take it. This causes a sugary substance to come from the leafs and feed the ant. However this also kills the growth tips of the tree. The whistling thorn, like many in its species, has found a way to live in the dry climate. It preserves moisture in its leaves.

River Bushwillow
The river bushwillow (Combretum erythrophyllum) is a plant that prefers to grow on riverbanks. It can be up to 35 feet tall with branches that grow quickly and in odd angles. It does produce fruit, but this is poisonous and causes bad hiccups. It needs a lot of water in order to grow. The plant grows fast and can withstand cold temperature.

Manketti Tree
Manketti trees (Schinziophyton rautanenii) grow in hot, dry climates that do not get much rain. It has a straight trunk with short branches. It is also able to grow to be 49-60 feet. It produces nuts and fruits which are edible and provide people and animals with food. It makes a lot of adaptations to live in the climate it does including a long taproot to reach water underground.
