Keystone Species
The African elephant is one keystone species of this area. These animals feed off of Acacia trees, while doing so they often knock them over and kill the tree. If it weren't for this, the savannas could become woodlands. Since the tree population is controlled, it's much easier to keep the grass replenished and ready to be eaten by the many animals that depend on it. (Picture below).
Endangered Species
Unfortunately, the Serengati is home to many endangered and threatened species. The ivory trade has made many animals, like the African elephant or Black rhinoceros, a target for poachers. The horns and tusks of these animals are cut off the animal and sold, this process kill the animal. Other animals like lions, cheetahs, giraffes, and Grevy's zebras. are also endangered.
